At The Little Nook, we do not sign up to one single approach to supporting students with special needs. As a team we utilize a number of interventions in order to truly personalise the experience for each of our students. We do however each have particular strategies in our teaching and therapy tool box that we come back to time and time again. Here we share some of these with you.
Communication Support: AAC

"Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) includes all forms of communication (other than oral speech) that are used to express thoughts, needs, wants, and ideas. We all use AAC when we make facial expressions or gestures, use symbols or pictures, or write."
Wonderful Workers Autism Classroom

Non-Verbal ! No probem ! At The Little Nook, we create a communication goal for each child and we utilise various forms of AAC into our daily practice. We are happy to share our knowledge and are always open to showing parents just what a difference AAC can make to a child's ability to express themselves.

Functional Academics

Most of our students are able to access learning objectives within the CAPs curriculum in some way. Although progress for a child with special needs may not be inline with mainstream age related milestones, we do feel that it is every child's right to have access to a broad, balanced and meaningful education. Our primary objective in our academic programme is to teach for mastery and ensure that there are opportunities for real-life application of academic skills and knowledge. We just love Numicon as a teaching resource that helps bring number concepts and patterns to life. We use the White Rose Singapore Maths programme to guide us through teaching for mastery. We align our literacy teaching to the high quality phonics, reading and writing programmes implemented in the United Kingdom such as Ruth Miskin's Phonics (Read Write Inc) and Pie Corbette's Talk for Writing. At The Little Nook ,you will certainly see your child thrive and flourish academically.

Play and Engagement
Helping students develop self expression and exploration skills through play forms an important part of our service. Intensive Interaction and Attention Autism's Bucket Therapy are some or our favourite practical approached to engaging with children with complex needs. We also implement many aspects of the TEACCH classroom management methodology that alleviates feelings of anxiety within students and thus supports their motivation to engage in adult directed learning opportunities. We believe that interacting with students in away that is meaningful to them is essential in building positive relationships and strong bonds.
